shirley - New Home Series: Sandalwood by ColRich | La Costa Life ...

Anyone who?s driven through or lives in La Costa is most likely aware of the current growth happening in the community. With open houses taking place almost weekly and signs of new neighborhoods popping up left and right, it?s hard to miss ? especially for a gal who?s still living in the beach area trying to save up to eventually live in one of these dream homes. So, that?s what I do ? I dream. About a month ago, I had the pleasure of viewing the gorgeous model homes in the new community of Sandalwood. I kept checking the closets expecting to find Martha Stewart hiding somewhere because I?m positive she?s the one who handled the interior design ? seriously, look at the images!

To get a better idea about the inspiration behind Sandalwood?s indoor/outdoor theme, we spoke with the mastermind behind the master-planned community of La Costa Oaks, architect, Michael Woodley from Woodley Architectural? Group, Inc.

What was your inspiration for this particular neighborhood?s design?

Our inspiration was the Spanish-style context of the La Costa community, but we took it up a?notch and made it cleaner and simpler with less ornamentation. We took the classic elements of the Spanish theme and modernized it. ?The bulk of the resale property in La Costa is representative of yesterday?s Old World styling, so Sandalwood will really look fresh and inviting.

How did the community?s location influence you?

La Costa is a beautiful area with an exceptional year-round climate, so we wanted to make the most of that. ?We focused on a real blending of indoor/outdoor spaces in Sandalwood homes. All the activity areas will have the ability to open up to the outdoors. ?We have rooms surrounded by a courtyard, and great rooms with corner glass windows versus solid walls.? One of the most exciting elements is vanishing walls, where the living space between the indoors and out becomes one. The main idea is that when you open the front door you?ll see right outside in the backyard and in some cases all the way to the coast. ?The home is built to capture stunning views and the area?s abundant outdoor lifestyle.

What trends in new home living are incorporated into your design? What might surprise home shoppers?

New housing needs to be new. Today?s floor plans need to live and feel more modern. Sandalwood homes are very different than what?s available in the marketplace. Overall, Sandalwood homes have an explosion of space. This is just not your typical stacked stories that add up to an affordable home with predictable architecture. These homes are uber-modern and reflect how our lives are changing. First, we have eliminated redundant spaces. Buyers don?t like to pay for space they don?t use.?Next, we incorporated an abundance of glass and natural light, which lends to the openness.?As for layout, the homes are not compartmentalized, where each room is assigned a specific task as in older homes where the living room was always for guests and the family room was the playroom. Sandalwood is designed to reflect today?s multi-task lifestyle. Spaces must overlap. Because life is blended, not compartmentalized.

Besides more space, what else is special about Sandalwood homes?

The kitchens feel very open.? Islands are not just a row of makeshift seats tacked onto the end of a utility area but are instead eating bars designed for people to sit and interact with each other.? Large utility rooms have outdoor access so families can accommodate their everyday storage and alternate access needs, or even their pets. There are downstairs bedrooms with a full bath so people can have proper guest accommodations with no one sharing the hallway powder room or giving up their study when family visits. Even master baths have space to sit so couples can catch up on their day while getting dressed. Upstairs lofts provide an alternate game or play space so all family members have access to media areas. Every master has ability to have substantial balcony or deck space, but also sizeable, secondary bedrooms take advantage of the view via balconies that overlook courtyards or neighborhood vistas.

How do Sandalwood homes fill the needs of what today?s homebuyers want in a new home?

Most people think today?s new home living is all about the economy ? it?s all about price and what people can afford. ?What architects realize is that a better designed home is more valuable to the buyer because it suits the way they live. The home doesn?t need to be big, but it needs to live big. The spaces must multi-task and every inch must be useful. ?We designed Sandalwood homes for ?the way you want to live versus what ?shows best.?? For example a formal entry might make an stunning first impression but if it never gets used then that space is for naught.

What type of person or family did you have in mind when you were drawing the floor plans for Sandalwood?

Actually we visualized our own families and extended families.? As a result, different generations will appreciate these homes. Baby boomers with children leaving the nest may not need the same room count but they still want room. The X generation who? initially resisted the idea of suburban living are now choosing to raise their children in a neighborhood like La Costa Oaks. The same generation that rejected the van in favor of the SUV and mini-SUV also wants an updated version of the traditional family home. And the Y generation is now ready to buy a home clearly wants something current and forward-living.

How would you sum up what you created at SandalWood?

We?ve talked about an explosion of space. Blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces. Rooms that multi-task because life is blended, not compartmentalized. How homes don?t need to be big to live big. These ideas play out in every corner of a Sandalwood home.

So, now you know all the details behind what to expect in the gorgeous homes of Sandalwood.? A huge thanks goes out to Mr. Woodley for taking the time to break this all down for us. I?d advise anyone mildly interested in moving soon (or looking for design inspiration) to take a tour of these model homes. Pictures really don?t do it justice!
