Oregon Humane Society: Protect pets in sizzling temperatures ...

It?s going to sizzle today ? have you heard? That means you need to protect your pets.

The Oregon Humane Society sent out these reminders to keep Felix and Fido safe when temperatures mount:

Here?s what not to do:

Don?t leave your pets in a car. On an 85-degree day, for example, the inside of a car can heat up to 120 degrees in 20 minutes, even with the windows slightly open. And don?t put dogs in an uncovered pickup bed ? their paws could burn.

Bring pets inside in the heat

Avoid exercising your dog in the heat; walk them in the morning or at night
?? ?
Here?s what you should do:

Keep pets inside and give them plenty of water

If you have to keep them outside, set up a ?kiddy pool? to cool them off
?? ??? ?
If your animal is overcome by heat exhaustion, spray the animal with cool but not cold water until its temperature lowers.

Also, be on the lookout for symptoms of heatstroke, which include restlessness, excessive thirst, heavy panting, lethargy, lack of appetite, dark tongue and vomiting. If you notice any symptoms, contact your veterinarian.
